New Movies On Demand: ‘The French Dispatch,’ ‘Clifford The Big Red Dog,’ + More

Wes Anderson has gone and out-Wes-Andersoned himself. The singular filmmaker’s latest, The French Dispatch, is out this week on VOD, and it contains all the markings of everything we’ve come to expect from one of his movies: meticulous production design, saturated color palettes, and Adrian Brody. The French Dispatch might also feature his largest ensemble of actors yet, including Tilda Swinton, Timothee Chalamet, Owen Wilson, and Bill Murray, and the stories in the film are everything we’ve come to expect from an Anderson joint.

While Anderson’s work often evokes the aesthetic of what it might be like to live within a storybook, the newly-released Clifford The Big Red Dog takes a children’s storybook favorite and brings him to life in CGI so that the world’s biggest dog can coexist with his favorite human, Emily Elizabeth (Darby Camp) and her Uncle Casey (Jack Whitehall).

And if you failed to catch it on Netflix, The Mitchells Vs. The Machines is now available to rent. The animated movie features the voices of Abbi Jacobsen, Maya Rudolph, and Olivia Colman among many others, with Jacobsen starring at Katie Mitchell, an aspiring filmmaker whose family decides to drive her to college rather than have her fly there alone. While on their road trip, an internationally renowned tech guru named Mark Bowman (Eric Andre), has revealed his latest invention, a series of robots with artificial intelligence that are meant to be helpful but end up threatening the human race. The robots turn against humans thanks to a disgruntled, outdated robot named PAL (Colman), who encourages them to capture all the humans on earth and launch them into outer space. Naturally, it’s up to Katie and her family to stop them.

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

The French Dispatch

Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch (officially titled The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun, in reference to the newspaper at the center of the film) is three stories in one movie, each based on an article that has appeared in the titular newspaper. When newspaper editor Arthur Howitzer Jr. (Bill Murray) dies, his final wish is that one final issue is printed featuring three of the paper’s old articles. Those articles are brought to life over three vignettes in which their writers (all of which are loosely based on New Yorker writers of old) and subjects in classic, whimsical, obsessively detailed Anderson style.

Clifford The Big Red Dog

Clifford The Big Red Dog is a clever and cute family film. If you – like me – always worry how beloved characters will fare when they receive the “live-action film” treatment, rest assured that Clifford is more in line with the recent Paddington adaptations, which are witty and charming, and less like the intolerable (IMHO) debacle known as Tom & Jerry. Emily Elizabeth (Darby Camp) is the new girl in a snobby school, struggling to find her place. When her Uncle Casey (Jack Whitehall) comes to stay with her, the two are followed home by a curious red puppy who eventually grows into a terrifyingly large dog and, though he wreaks havoc all over the city, he also must escape the clutches of a creepy science/tech exec played by Tony Hale, who wants to harness Clifford’s DNA in order to figure out how to make other stuff, well, BIG. Parents need not worry that they have to sit through a sloggy dogfest, even though Clifford can feel formulaic, it’s also charming and fun for all.
