Steve Martin Responds to ‘Jeopardy!’ Doppelgänger

Jeopardy! fans, Steve Martin has heard you loud and clear. After calls that said Professors Tournament champ Sam Buttrey looked exactly like the Only Murders In The Building star circulated on Twitter, the comedian took to social media to celebrate the victorious contestant. Taking things even further, Jeopardy! went so far as to invite Martin to play on the show. We’re going to need real life Celebrity Jeopardy! stat.

“We’re giving an A+ to Sam Buttrey for winning our first-ever #ProfessorsTournament,” Jeopardy shared on Twitter. “We’ll see him in the next Tournament of Champions!”

And later, Martin launched himself into the game show’s stratosphere, sharing his own tweet about the whole saga: “So great to split the prize money with Sam!”

From his very first episode, folks have been comparing Buttrey to Martin. They not only think the contestant shares looks with the former SNL star, but also has the same demeanor, from his sense of humor to his tone of voice. On top of that, viewers noticed a coincidence in Buttrey’s first game: one of the categories was King Tut, a character that made Martin famous on SNL.

After Martin tweeted at Jeopardy!, the revered game show fired right back to him, offering him a place on the show. Uh, step aside Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik — let’s have Martin take a turn at the hosting podium.

“We would love to have you on Jeopardy! anytime, in any capacity,” the game show’s Twitter account shared.

Buttrey won the very first Professor’s Tournament, raking in a whopping $100,000 in winnings. He’ll now advance into the upcoming Tournament of Champions, where he’ll get the chance to throw down with this year’s biggest names in Jeopardy! — including Matt Amodio and Amy Schneider.

“This has been the greatest time, and to come out ahead of all these other great players is something I’ll remember forever,” said Buttrey. “The group was uniformly so smart, charming, and warm, and there’s been a real feeling of camaraderie from the very beginning.”

Jeopardy! airs weeknights on ABC at 7/6c.
