Will There Be a ‘Matrix 5?’ What We Know About a Possible ‘Matrix Resurrections’ Sequel

This Christmas, everybody who is anybody is going back to the Matrix. The Matrix Resurrections, the fourth film in the sci-fi franchise that blew a generation’s mind back in 1999, opened in theaters and began streaming on HBO Max today. If you’re a true believer, you’ve no doubt already seen the film—possibly you’ve seen it twice—and now you’re wondering: “OK, so when does The Matrix 5 come out?!”

Which isn’t to say that The Matrix Resurrections isn’t a damn good time on its own. Directed by Lana Wachowski—who also co-wrote the script with David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon—the sequel takes place twenty years after the events of Matrix Revolutions, aka Matrix 3, which was originally intended to be the last movie. But despite how the third film left things, your favorite sci-fi couple is back. Keanu Reeves is back as Thomas Anderson, aka the man he was before he took the red pills and saw the truth. He’s seeing a psychiatrist (Neil Patrick Harris) struggling with dreams that don’t feel like dreams. Then he runs into Trinity (played by Carrie-Anne Moss, reprising her role from the 1999 film) at a cafe called, brilliantly, Simulatte, and wonders out loud, “Have we met?”

It’s down the rabbit hole from there. But when you reach the bottom, you’ll find that The Matrix Resurrections certainly left room for more. Read on to find out what we know about a fifth Matrix movie.

WILL THERE BE A MATRIX 5?

The short answer is: We don’t know. Currently, no official plans for a Matrix Resurrections sequel have been announced.

Warner Media Chair and CEO Ann Sarnoff hinted that Warner Bros. would be open to a Matrix 5, if director Lana Wachowski wanted to make it. “Anytime Lana wants to make a movie, we’re all in,” Sarnoff told Deadline back in October. As with Dune, which was greenlit for a sequel after a successful box office, Warner Bros will no doubt want more Matrix films if Resurrections makes a lot of money in theaters. (With concerns about the Omicron variant rising, it’s possible fans may opt to stream Matrix 4 at home, but it’s still likely to do well in theaters over the holiday weekend.)

That said, Wachowski and her cast have so far remained tight-lipped when it comes to the possibility of another Matrix movie.

Beyond that, there is at least one other Matrix project in development at Warner Bros. However, this is not a sequel movie, but a spin-off prequel that is, “set earlier in the timeline of the Matrix universe,” according to the film’s screenwriter, Zak Penn, who tweeted about the movie in October 2019.

There haven’t been any updates on that movie, so it’s unclear if it’s still happening. For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
