New Movies On Demand: ‘C’Mon C’Mon,’ ‘Benedetta,’ ‘Antlers,’ + More

After a theatrical run, the Guillermo del Toro-produced Antlers, which stars Keri Russell and Jesse Plemons, is finally out this week on VOD. The film’s release was oft-delayed due to COVID, and we’re enjoying the fact that the timing of a horror thriller named Antlers coincides with our favorite reindeer-based holiday. Also coming out on demand just in time for your Christmas mass is Paul Verhoeven’s Benedetta, a provocative lesbian nun story, a phrase that even Paul Verhoeven would find too on the nose if he had to describe the kind of work he does.

And Joaquin Phoenix stars in C’Mon C’Mon, Mike Mills’ follow-up to 2016’s excellent 20th Century Women. In the film, Phoenix stars as a radio producer named Johnny who works on a show that requires him to interview kids. Though he can chat with kids he doesn’t know with ease, he struggles with how to care for one after he’s forced to be the guardian to his nephew, Jesse (Woody Norman). While Phoenix’s presence on film can often feel intense and intimidating, his portrayal as an adult trying to do right by his new ward, getting to know him and understand how to care for him is more vulnerable, it’s nice to see a softer, less intense side to him sometimes. Like most of Mills’ films, this one is a study in relationships and life in general, the good and the bad, and assures us that even when we’re tested, we’ll be okay.

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

Antlers

In Antlers, Keri Russell stars as an Oregon teacher named Julia who has a student named Lucas (Jeremy T. Thomas) whose behavior alarms her. He draws creepy illustrations and he seems troubled, which Julia assumes is due to an unstable or abusive home life, something she knows about, having been abused herself. But unbeknownst to Julia, Lucas’s brother and father, who were recently attacked by a mysterious creature, have been living in a locked room inside their house, ravenous for meat and blood. What’s happening to them? Well, that’s the mystery of the day, and it unfolds gruesomely over the course of the film.

Benedetta

Benedetta (played by Virginie Efira) was, in real life, a young nun in 1600s Italy who had visions of Jesus Christ. She was also in a sexual relationship with another nun named Bartolomea (Daphne Patakia). When people start to question the veracity of her visions, they also learn of her forbidden relationship and, this being a film set in the Catholic Church, hell breaks loose.
