Star Wars fans have been waiting for The Book of Boba Fett for a very long time without even knowing it. Since he first appeared on the bridge of a Star Destroyer in 1980’s Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Boba Fett has been a superstar in the Star Wars universe. Fett’s rise to pop culture ubiquity always seemed rather odd considering his main claim to fame in the ’80s was firing his blaster a few times before suffering one of the silliest deaths in the entire trilogy. Whatever — his armor was instantly iconic and the character was just cool.

With The Mandalorian and the benefit of a TV series’ elongated run time, Boba Fett finally got what he’s long deserved: vindication and respect. In 2020, 40 years after the release of Empire, Boba Fett got to cut loose and show off all of his warrior skills. He was given motivation, a creed, a new look, a new partner, and a new performer in Temuera Morrison. For the first time, the guy in the Boba Fett armor, the face under the helmet, and the voice we heard all belonged to the same guy! And now, after watching this new and improved Fett steal so many scenes from the leads of The Mandalorian, he’s getting a show of his own.

Premiering on December 29, The Book of Boba Fett picks up where The Mandalorian Season 2 left off. Fett and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) are on Tatooine and ready to fill the vacuum left by Jabba the Hutt’s death at the hands of Leia Organa five years prior. But Fett promises to be a new kind of leader of the underworld — that is, if all the other gnarly criminals of the galaxy don’t kill him first.

Before you experience Boba Fett’s first-ever leading role in his debut TV series, you may want to brush up on his history. After all, for a man of mystery, we’ve actually seen a lot of him over the past few decades. Here’s Boba Fett’s chronological viewing order.

Boba Fett’s debut in 2002’s Attack of the Clones not only gave the fan favorite bounty hunter a definitive origin story, but it also kicked off a series of adventures for the young warrior-in-training. Following his father’s murder at the hands of Jedi master Mace Windu, Boba Fett resurfaced in two stretches of episodes of The Clone Wars where he sought revenge and started to make a name for himself.

  2. Star Wars: The Clone Wars,“Death Trap” (2×20)
  3. Star Wars: The Clone Wars,“R2 Come Home” (2×21)
  4. Star Wars: The Clone Wars,“Lethal Trackdown” (2×22)

Boba Fett’s story — at least his story as depicted so far — then skips ahead 20 years, glossing over how he became the most notorious and feared bounty hunter in the galaxy. When we see him again in the special edition cut of A New Hope, he’s on Tatooine backing up Jabba the Hutt as the gangster intimidates Han Solo into paying off his debts. Fett’s screen time in the original Star Wars trilogy is minimal, but you can’t deny that he’s his stoic presence adds tension to every scene he’s in… well, until his embarrassing demise in Return of the Jedi.

When Disney+ announced they were launching a Star Wars TV series titled The Mandalorian, it was only a matter of time before the show dealt with the legacy of the most famous Mandalorian in the galaxy (or rather the most famous person to wear Mandalorian armor — it’s a whole thing). The show actually introduced Boba Fett halfway through Season 1, although viewers didn’t realize it at the time. But after another tease of a Boba Fett/Din Djarin showdown in the Season 2 premiere, the final three episodes of the season finally gave Fett plenty of attention and finally — finally! — let the character be just as badass onscreen as he’s been in our imaginations.

  1. The Mandalorian, “The Gunslinger” (1×5)
  2. The Mandalorian, “The Marshal” (2×1)
  3. The Mandalorian, “The Tragedy” (2×6)
  4. The Mandalorian, “The Believer” (2×7)
  5. The Mandalorian, “The Rescue” (2×8)

This is the perfect time for The Book of Boba Fett to drop — and maybe the series will tie up some of the loose ends in the character’s backstory. What did he do between The Clone Wars and A New Hope? And how did he survive the Sarlacc pit? Those questions and more just may get answers when The Book of Boba Fett kicks off on December 29.

That’s not all the Fett content available to stream on Disney+. In fact, the most important Boba Fett artifact hasn’t appeared in this streaming guide yet: that’s 1978’s “The Story of the Faithful Wookiee.” Aired as part of The Star Wars Holiday Special, this animated short marked the debut appearance of Boba Fett a full year and a half before the release of The Empire Strikes Back in theaters. And if you want to learn more about how that inauspicious debut came to be, you can watch the Boba doc Under the Helmet.
