Netflix Announces ‘Cheer’ Season 2, Debuts Trailer Featuring Jerry Harris Fallout

Navarro Cheer is headed back to Netflix. Today, the streamer announced that its docuseries Cheer, which follows rival Texas cheer squads, will return with a new season in January. Netflix also released a trailer for the sophomore season, which teases the Navarro squad’s emotional reactions to everything from newfound fame to pandemic disruptions to a serious criminal allegations being levied at a former teammate.

Part of Cheer Season 2 will address the case surrounding Jerry Harris, a popular Season 1 cast member who was arrested in September 2020 on a charge of producing child pornography. That December, he faced new federal child pornography charges as well as enticing minors to engage in sexual activity. Harris has pleaded not guilty in the federal case, which is still ongoing. In February 2021, two more cheerleaders who were featured in the series were charged in separate criminal cases related to sexual misconduct involving minors.

As Navarro Cheer deals with the fallout of these cases, they also face major pressure heading into the 2021 cheer season. This season, Cheer will also follow their fiercest rival: The Trinity Valley Community College cheer team, which includes one athlete who’s described as “the Simone Biles of cheerleading.” After the 2020 cheer season was disrupted due to COVID-19, the two teams prepare to go head to head at the 2021 championship in Daytona, Florida.

“I am a huge believer in the power of stories and telling them honestly. I believe the story is going to ultimately be the best version of itself when you are honoring what is true, and you’re not running from it,” Cheer director and executive producer Greg Whiteley said in a statement. “This season covers events as they unfolded, beginning in January 2020 through April 2021.”

He continued: “The new episodes also tackle extremely difficult moments, including the impact of COVID-19 and criminal charges against one of Navarro’s former team members. It was inspiring, heartbreaking, sometimes frustrating, and ultimately moving to be a part of their lives.”

The series is produced by One Potato Productions, Boardwalk Pictures, and Caviar. Executive producers include Andrew Fried, Dane Lillegard, Jasper Thomlinson, and Bert Hamelinck.

Cheer Season 2 premieres Wednesday, January 12, on Netflix. Scroll up to watch the official trailer.
