Sorry, ‘Matrix’ Fans — No Future Films Are Currently In The Works After ‘Resurrections’

Warning: Spoilers for The Matrix Resurrections follow.

Don’t expect to see Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) again anytime soon, Matrix fans. In a recent interview with Collider, producer James McTeigue said that as of right now, the Matrix team (including director Lana Wachowski, who helmed the series’ fourth installment solo without her sister Lilly) have no plans for future films following 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections.

“Look for us, I think, at the moment, it’s just the movie you’ve seen,” McTeigue said. “We’ve got no prequel in mind. We’ve got no sequel in mind. We’ve got no further trilogy.”

The Matrix Resurrections ends with Neo and Trinity flying off into the sunset together, after once again breaking free from the confines of the Matrix and resolving to remake their cyberpunk world together. Still, McTeigue admitted that the ending left space for potential new installments somewhere down the line.

“I think the film also works where it’s really open to audience interpretation, like what happened in those 60 years before they fished Neo out again, or Thomas Anderson to Neo,” he said. “When Neo and Trinity are there at the end… what do they actually mean that they’re going to change [in the Matrix]? So I think that it’s out there, but it’s not in our wheelhouse at the moment.”

McTeigue added that when it comes to sequels, “there’s always the financial part of it. There’s always the filmmakers who want to make the films, and there’s always the studios or the streamers who have the money to facilitate that. So yeah. It’s always a business equation as much of a creative equation.”

The Matrix Resurrections is now playing in theaters and on HBO Max, where it’s available to stream through Jan. 21 as the last film that’s part of Warner Bros.’ 2021 day-and-date release model.
