Happy New Year, everyone! There’s so much exciting content to look forward to in the months ahead, but before we jump too far forward, we’d like to shout out some of the top titles coming out in the near future and the fantastic women bringing them to life. For this year’s first Woman Crush Wednesday, we’re celebrating a hilarious actress and writer who got her start improvising with The Groundlings before serving out some quality comedy to the masses through her years working in film and TV. So, without further ado, give it up for 2022’s first WCW, the excellent Edi Patterson.
WHO’S THAT GAL: Edi Patterson
WHY WE’RE CRUSHING: Patterson reprises her role as Judy Gemstone (and work as a writer!) in the highly-anticipated sophomore season of HBO Original title The Righteous Gemstones, which premieres on the platform this Sunday, January 9th. The dark comedy series’s second season once again revolves around the Gemstones, a family of televangelists and megachurch pastors headed by patriarch Eli Gemstone (John Goodman), following the events of last season that have sparked enemies to come out of the woodwork to blackmail the Gemstones and ruin their empire. To add to the drama and fun, look forward to a Succession-like squabble between the three immature adult Gemstone siblings, Jesse (Danny McBride), Judy (Patterson), and Kelvin (Adam DeVine) over who will eventually take over the family business from their father. In addition to Goodman, McBride, Patterson, and DeVine, the series also features Skyler Gisondo, Walton Goggins, Cassidy Freeman, Jennifer Nettles, and newcomers Jason Schwartzman and Eric Andre.
It’s sure to be a season full of excitement, absurdity, and some juicy crime and action, so be sure to see it all go down in The Righteous Gemstones: Season 2, only on HBO.
WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER BEFORE: Patterson’s professional onscreen career began in 1995 when she voiced Pirotesse/Sheru in the English dubbed version of animated action-adventure film Legend of Crystania. Within the next few years she picked up additional voice acting roles in videos “Variable Geo” and “Tekken: The Motion Picture” and 1999 animated action-comedy film City Hunter before landing her first in-person role in 2000 mystery film In Flagrante. Just one year later, Patterson appeared in an episode of CBS’s CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, kicking off an impressive string of guest and recurring roles on television series like Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Underground, The Showbiz Show with David Spade, Unhitched, and Popzilla.
From there, Patterson’s career was taken to the next level thanks to her work in TV series like Weeds, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The New Normal, 2 Broke Girls, Californication, The League, Partners, Black-ish, and Mike Tyson Mysteries, as well as in films like 2009 comedy Jesus People: The Movie, 2011 animated sci-fi Mars Needs Moms, and 2012 comedy-drama A Thousand Words. It has been within the last several years, however, that Patterson has truly gotten to shine on a larger stage, showing off her comedic chops as memorable recurring characters on We Bare Bears, Vice Principals, and The Last O.G., as well as through appearances on other shows like Nobodies, Infinity Train, The Fungies!, Ten Year Old Tom, and Teenage Euthanasia, and in films like 2019 comedy-drama Troop Zero, 2019 mystery-comedy Knives Out, 2019 comedy Between Two Ferns: The Movie, 2020 animated comedy We Bare Bears: The Movie, 2021 comedy Plan B, 2021 crime-thriller The Guilty, and 2021 drama The Starling.
Clearly, Patterson is a talented actress both in comedic roles and beyond, and we can’t wait to see all of the amazing work she continues to produce on screens big and small in the years to come.
