‘Yellowstone’ Season 4 Finale Was Most Watched Cable Broadcast Since ‘Walking Dead’ Season 8

The Yellowstone universe is getting bigger than ever. The Season 4 finale of Taylor Sheridan and Paramount Network‘s Kevin Costner-led drama reached new heights, drawing 9.3 million total viewers on Paramount Network, and 10.3 million including a simulcast on CMT. As noted in a press release touting the numbers provided to Decider, that makes the January 2 episode the most watched telecast on cable since The Walking Dead‘s Season 8 premiere in October 2017.

These numbers also mark an 81% increase from the Season 3 finale (which drew 5.2 million viewers), according to data provided by Nielsen.

Yellowstone has also become the No. 1 series of 2021 across broadcast, cable, and premium, with Sheridan further expanding the Yellowstone universe thanks to prequel 1883. In addition, Sheridan produced series Mayor of Kingstown has also been a hit for Paramount+, and ViacomCBS as a whole.

Yellowstone continues to shatter records with more than 11 million viewers tuning into the season finale, proving we’ve hit a cultural nerve – from the center of the country to each of the coasts – and still have lots of room to grow on linear,” said Chris McCarthy, President and CEO of ViacomCBS Media Networks, via the release. “Our strategy to franchise Yellowstone into a universe of series to fuel growth for Paramount+ is already exceeding expectations with 1883 and Mayor of Kingstown proving to be two of the top titles.”

In a statement of his own, CEO of 101 Studios David C. Glasser added: “It is incredibly rewarding to see the Yellowstone audience continue to expand even as we come to the close of our 4th season. This expansion is a true testament to the original voices and universe that Taylor created.”

You can currently stream the first three seasons of Yellowstone on Peacock Premium. Season 4 is available to stream on the Paramount Network with a valid cable log in, and on Philo and fuboTV on demand.

An earlier version of this story incorrectly cited The Walking Dead Season 3, instead of Season 8.
