Can You Watch The Golden Globes 2022? Why The Ceremony Won’t Stream Live

The 79th annual Golden Globes take place tonight, and this year’s show is shaping up to be pretty different from the other ceremonies that came before it. In case you’ve remained blissfully unaware up until this point, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association came under fire in early 2021, after a February Los Angeles Times story discovered allegations of self-promotion and a lack of diversity within the awards body. Since the awards shows’ ordinary broadcast partner, NBC, has split from the HPFA, the ceremony’s usual live broadcast seems to be out this year. Curious where you can watch the 2022 Golden Globes? The answer is: nowhere, though you can follow along live.

One element remains the same: the HFPA is set to honor the past year’s top film and TV talent at this year’s show. The films Belfast and The Power of the Dog became the most-nominated movies of the year with seven nominations, while HBO’s Succession nabbed the most TV nods with five nominations. The 2022 awards show will also spotlight the HFPA’s philanthropy work.

So, will the 2022 Golden Globes ceremony still be available to stream somewhere, NBC be damned? Here’s everything you need to know.

WHEN ARE THE 2022 GOLDEN GLOBES?

The 2022 Golden Globes take place on Sunday, Jan. 9, at 6 p.m. PT. The event will be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel ballroom in Los Angeles, California.

WHERE TO WATCH THE 2022 GOLDEN GLOBES:

Unless you’re at the Beverly Hilton Hotel tonight, the answer is: nowhere. According to a tweet from the event’s official account that was confirmed by Decider, “This year’s event is going to be a private event and will not be live-streamed. We will be providing real-time updates on winners on the Golden Globes website and our social media.”

So you won’t be able to watch the Golden Globes 2022 on YouTube, Twitter, the Golden Globes website, or through any other means, unless you’ve been specifically invited to the event by the HPFA.

WHO WILL ATTEND THE GOLDEN GLOBES?

Even without the livestream or broadcast, this year’s Golden Globes won’t be the same star-studded event you’ve gotten used to seeing over the years. Only select HFPA members and philanthropy grantees will be present at the ceremony amid the current pandemic surge. So that means no Golden Globes red carpet, no celebrity pictures… Just the HPFA, some grant recipients, and a few tweets. Guess you’ll have to get dressed up in a fancy gown and get drunk all on your own this year.
