'Degrassi' Revival Axed by HBO Max Less Than a Year After It Was Announced
HBO Max is bringing back all the nostalgia with Degrassi. WarnerMedia Kids & Family announced today that it has greenlit Degrassi, a brand new version of the original teen series of the same name. Additionally, the streamer has acquired the rights to Degrassi: The Next Generation, which will be available on the platform this spring.
The brand new teen and family series will release exclusively on HBO Max in 2023, helmed by showrunners Lara Azzopardi and Julia Cohen. The series will span over 10 hour-long episodes, following a new group of Toronto teenagers and school faculty “living in the shadow of events that both bind them together and tear them apart.”
“A reprise of the original teen drama, Degrassi is a character-driven series about the high school experience and the thrilling, often painful journey of self-discovery,” teases WarnerMedia. “The show travels deep into the hearts and homes of diverse, complicated characters, as they struggle to find their new normal, reaching for hope, redemption and love.”
All 14 seasons of Degrassi: The Next Generation will be made available soon — be sure to catch up before the new episodes land on the streamer. The show ran from 2001 to 2015 on Nickelodeon, starring big names like Drake, Miriam McDonald, Lauren Collins, and more.
“Series after series, the Degrassi franchise continues to make an indelible impact on young viewers looking for trustworthy and authentic storytelling,” said Amy Friedman, Head of Kids & Family Programming, Warner Bros. “WildBrain continues to artfully capture high school life in a compelling format that can be experienced seamlessly on HBO Max.”
The new Degrassi will be produced by WildBrain Studios and developed by Azzopardi and Cohen, who will also serve as executive producers. Filming is set to begin this summer in Toronto.
“What excites us maybe the most about reviving this beloved franchise is turning it into a truly serialized one-hour drama,” Azzopardi and Cohen said in a joint statement. “We’re honored to be given the opportunity to lead this evolution and bring this iconic series back into people’s homes.”
