Jason Mantzoukas Voices Sebastian Stan’s Penis in ‘Pam & Tommy’

Just when you thought Euphoria was bringing the heat with all the full frontal male nudity, get a kick out of this news about Pam & Tommy. Sebastian Stan, who plays Tommy Lee in the upcoming Hulu series, has opened up about another key role in the show: his penis. And it’s not simply a quick peek at the member — no, that would be too obvious. Instead, his genitals are a full-on character in the show, voiced by Jason Mantzoukas.

In a new Variety profile of Stan and his co-star Lily James (who plays Pamela Anderson), the actor and show creators open up about the decision to include the body part as a full-blown character. The twist is actually inspired by a real passage in Lee’s memoir, Tommyland. In the scene, Tommy has a full-on conversation with his penis about whether or not he’s falling in love with Pamela.

“As much as I’d like to take credit for that, I was simply adapting a chapter from [Lee’s] memoir,” writer Robert Siegel says. “I think it might be a first [for television]. There was gentle pushback, because you’ve got to push back a little when a talking penis is presented to you. But Hulu was extremely supportive.”

But director Craig Gillespie says that as fun as the scene seems, shooting it was “just awkward.”

“You’ve got four puppeteers working with an animatronic penis,” he told Variety. “And then, how much is too much, and do you start to lose his emotional torment of what’s going on? Hopefully it works.”

The actor himself actually learned from the experience, saying he treated shooting the scene like working with any other acting partner.

“By the end of it,” Stan says, “I treated it like it was an intimate buddy conversation that one might have when they’re falling in love.”
