On today’s episode of The View, the ABC talk show’s panel pitied Big Little Lies actress Shailene Woodley over her engagement to anti-vax NFL player Aaron Rodgers (with whom she reportedly avoids discussing politics). The conversation also led to a larger discussion of how much you should agree upon when it comes to spouses.
While moderator Whoopi Goldberg noted that she’s been in relationships with people she’s never talked politics with because they were “really good people and really good partners,” guest host Lisa Ling wasn’t so sure.
“It would be hard to share a bed and raise kids with someone who had fundamental differences,” she pointed out.
Joy Behar agreed, saying, “I couldn’t do it. If you’re a Trump supporter, I’d rather be in a convent.”
“I don’t think I could do it, especially when it comes to these types of fundamental issues,” Sunny Hostin said. “I couldn’t be married to an anti-vaxxer. I couldn’t be married to someone who didn’t believe in science and medicine. I couldn’t be married to someone who didn’t believe in science and medicine. I couldn’t be married to someone who believes in white supremacy.”
As Behar noted, “Marriage is difficult enough.”
“You disagree on so many things,” she continued. “Where to send the kids to school. Where do you wanna live? Should we visit the in-laws this weekend or next weekend? There’s a million things you can disagree on. But the fundamental worldview you should agree on.”
The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
