Will ‘Cyrano’ Be on HBO Max or Netflix?

Cyrano, the new musical romantic drama opening in theaters this weekend, is a tale as old as time—or, at least as old as 1897, the year Edmond Rostand’s play Cyrano de Bergerac premiered.

This new adaptation of the story, written and directed by Joe Wright (Pride and Prejudice, Anna Karenina), is based on a 2018 stage musical, and stars Peter Dinklage as the tragic lead character, Cyrano de Bergerac. In 19th-century France, Cyrano quietly pines for the very beautiful Roxanne (played by Haley Bennett), though he knows she will never love him. Instead, she loves the handsome Christian de Neuvillette (played by Kelvin Harrison Jr.). Cyrano offers his skills as a talented poet, to help Christian woo the girl of Cyrano’s dreams. Woof!

This movie has everything—romance, dance numbers, and more—and you want to know how to watch Cyrano ASAP. Unfortunately, the film is only in theaters for now. Read on to find out where to watch Cyrano and when to expect Cyrano on streaming.

WHERE TO WATCH CYRANO:

Right now, the only place to watch Cyrano is in a movie theater. Cyrano will begin playing in theaters across the U.S. on Friday, February 25, and in the U.K. on February 25. You can find a showing near you here.

WHEN WILL CYRANO BE ON STREAMING?

A digital release date for Cyrano has not yet been announced, and it’s hard to predict when the film will become available to rent on demand.

Cyrano is an MGM/United Artists release, and unlike other movie studios during the pandemic, MGM has not had a consistent digital release strategy for its films. For example, House of Gucci is scheduled to release on digital platforms on February 1, after about 10 weeks in theaters. Other films like Licorice Pizza, still don’t have a digital release date.

Given that, our best guess is that Cyrano will stay in theaters exclusively for at least 45 days, a window many studios are now adhering to. By that timeline, you likely won’t be able to watch Cyrano at home until mid-April 2022. Once the film does come to digital, you’ll be able to rent it on Amazon Prime, iTunes, YouTube, Google Play, Vudu, and more.

Keep in mind, this is all guesswork—take these estimates with a grain of salt.

WILL CYRANO BE ON HBO MAX?

No. Cyrano is not a Warner Bros. movie, and therefore will not be streaming on HBO Max when it opens in theaters. More than that, HBO Max will no longer be streaming theatrical movies in 2022. Last year, Warner Media opted to simultaneously release its theatrical slate on streaming, meaning HBO Max subscribers could watch movies like Matrix Resurrections at home. This year, however, Warner Bros. theatrical movies will have a 45-day theaters-only run before moving to HBO Max.

IS CYRANO ON NETFLIX?

No. Cyrano is not on Netflix and likely will not be on Netflix any time soon. If you want to see Cyrano de Bergerac dance around ASAP, your best option right now is to go see Cyrano in a movie theater.
