‘Raising Dion’ Recap: What to Remember About Season 1

After a long wait, Raising Dion Season 2 is now available to binge on Netflix. It’s been over two years since we last saw Dion face off against the Crooked Man, and a lot has changed for the super-powered elementary schooler. But since it’s been two years since the Season 1 finale, you might need a Raising Dion refresher. Two years is a long time to wait between seasons!

If you need to get caught up on Raising Dion or just want a reminder of what the kid went through in Season 1, this recap is for you.

What is Raising Dion about?

Raising Dion is a superhero series told from the point-of-view of an 8-year-old (Ja’Siah Young) with superpowers. But just because Dion’s in elementary school doesn’t mean that this series is kid stuff. Dion has to face all of the villains and shadowy government conspiracies that adult heroes have to face.

The series stars Alisha Wainwright as Nicole, the widow of a scientist named Mark (executive producer Michael B. Jordan). Mark was one of a group of scientists present in Iceland for an aurora event that gave them all superpowers. Mark passed these powers on to Dion, and then died under mysterious circumstances. So, what happened to Dion’s dad? How will Nicole deal with being a single mom to a kid with powers? What is biotech company BIONA really up to? Those are the questions that Season 1 set out to answer.

How did Raising Dion Season 1 end?

In a big twist, it was revealed that Mark was actually killed by his best friend — and Dion’s godfather — Pat (Jason Ritter). Pat got powers during the aurora event too, powers that allowed him to turn into a raging storm of black clouds and evil energy. Dion even gave that nasty, living superstorm a super villain name: The Crooked Man.

Dion totally trusted his godfather as he inserted himself into the family unit, even getting close to Nicole. But Pat wasn’t just angling to become Dion’s stepdad. He wanted to use Dion’s healing powers to cure a side effect from that aurora event — even if that meant draining Dion’s life energy.

Fortunately for Dion, his family and friends rallied around him and formed a quasi-superteam to fight the Crooked Man. Dion’s classmates Esperanza (Sammi Haney) and Jonathan (Gavin Munn) pitched in, and even BIONA CEO Suzanne Wu (Ali Ahn) helped fight the Crooked Man. They won the battle and the Crooked Man dissipated, releasing all of the energy he’d captured from his powered victims. That included Mark, who got the chance to say goodbye to his wife and son.

But if you thought that was the end of the Crooked Man, think again. At the end of Season 1, we caught up with another powered kid, Dion’s age, named Brayden (Griffin Robert Faulkner). As seen in the final seconds of Season 1, the Crooked Man’s storm cloud had hitched a ride on the little telepath — and that means trouble for Dion.

What can we expect in Raising Dion Season 2?

A lot has changed in the two years since the end of Season 1. Dion, Esperanza, and Jonathan are now a legit superhero team. Mark’s brief return hasn’t been forgotten either, and Dion holds out hope that his dad will come back to life for good. Meanwhile, Dion’s learning how to use his many powers at BIONA with a powered trainer named Tevin (Rome Flynn). Even BIONA CEO Suzanne has grown into one of Nicole’s best friends. But whatever stability Dion, Nicole, and their allies have found is threatened when Brayden’s two-year odyssey to Atlanta culminates with his arrival at Dion’s school. This kid’s gonna be a bad influence on Dion.

Season 2 of Raising Dion is now streaming on Netflix.
