‘The View’ Slams Republicans As New Evidence About Trump’s Interference in 2020 Election Surfaces: “Domestic Terrorism Apologists”

Now that new details about former President Donald Trump‘s interference in the 2020 presidential election have come to light, The View’s hosts are questioning how Republicans will be accountable for their complacency in his actions. Former GOP Communications director and guest host Tara Setmayer went so far as to call Republicans “domestic terrorism apologists,” and urged Democrats to focus on their behavior moving into the 2022 midterm elections.

The New York Times recently reported that Trump was involved in a plot to make Homeland Security seize voting machines during the last presidential election, while the National Archives confirmed that he violated the Presidential Records Act by ripping up records of presidential documents (per CNN).

But as Setmayer argued, Republicans likely wouldn’t let this slide if a Democrat  committed these offenses. “Could you imagine if Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama or a Democrat had done a fraction of this?” she said. “This is not going to be a policy election. This is political guerrilla warfare, and Democrats can’t bring a policy pen to a guerrilla warfare fight like this. The American people need to understand what’s at stake.”

She continued: “I think Democrats have got to be more clear that this is an election about democracy. It’s either democracy or authoritarianism.”

As Sunny Hostin pointed out, this wasn’t always the case. After all, Republicans forced former President Richard Nixon to resign during the 1970s Watergate scandal.

“Why are they afraid to lose their jobs, is what I wanna know,” Joy Behar said.

Setmayer argued that Republicans declining to criticize Trump for fear of losing public office “is the most cynical part of politics.”

“It speaks a lot about where we are as a country, and the role that Republicans are playing in the slowburn of destroying our democracy, and they should be held accountable for it,” she added.

The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
