Anna Delvey Slams Netflix’s ‘Inventing Anna’ Ahead of Release: “I Felt Like An Afterthought”

Anna Sorokin (aka Anna Delvey) is none too pleased with Netflix‘s Inventing Anna, an upcoming series based on the infamous German scammer’s exploits. Ahead of the show’s Feb. 11 release, Sorokin penned an Insider essay from jail slamming its release. She wrote that she felt “like an afterthought” and isn’t interested in watching it “even if I were to pull some strings to make it happen.”

“While the world is pondering Julia Garner‘s take on my accent in Inventing Anna … the real me sits in a cell in Orange County in upstate New York, in quarantine isolation,” Sorokin wrote.

She is currently being held by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, who she claims violated the conditions of her parole following her February 2021 release from prison.

“Even if I were to pull some strings and make it happen, nothing about seeing a fictionalized version of myself in this criminal-insane-asylum setting sounds appealing to me,” Sorokin said.

She continued: “While I’m curious to see how they interpreted all the research and materials provided, I can’t help feel like an afterthought, the somber irony of being confined to a cell at yet another horrid correctional facility lost between the lines, the history repeating itself.”

Created by Shonda Rhimes, Inventing Anna is based on Jessica Pressler’s 2018 New York Magazine article “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People — And its Banks.” The piece detailed how Sorokin scammed rich New Yorkers out of roughly $275,000 by posing as a wealthy heiress. Garner stars as Anna, while Anna Chlumsky plays Vivian, a reporter who becomes obsessed with unraveling her story.

Garner defended Inventing Anna‘s portrayal of Sorokin in a recent interview with Town & Country, saying, “People don’t necessarily have to agree with what she did, but I want to help people try to understand why she did it.”

Inventing Anna premieres Friday, Feb. 11, on Netflix.
