‘Sweet Magnolias’ Season 1 Recap: What to Remember Before Watching Season 2

After a terribly long wait, Sweet Magnolias is finally back on Netflix with Season 2. This sweet Southern soap opera released its first batch of episodes way back in May 2020 — and now we’re finally getting the next bunch of chapters. But since it’s been over a year and a half since we last saw Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen pour one out, you may have forgotten just where we left our Sweet Magnolias.

If you need to get caught up on Sweet Magnolias or just want a reminder of where we left our leading ladies in the Season 1 finale, this recap is for you.

What is Sweet Magnolias about?

Based on the series of Sweet Magnolias novels by Sherryl Woods, this Netflix series follows the lives of three lifelong friends as they go through all sorts of trials and tribulations in South Carolina. There’s Maddie Townsend (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), a divorcée with three kids and a new spa to run. Last season she ended up falling for hunky high school baseball coach (and former pro athlete) Cal Maddox (Justin Bruening). Then there’s Dana Sue Sullivan (Brooke Elliott), the owner and head chef at Sullivan’s. She’s estranged from her husband Ronnie (Brandon Quinn) and has a headstrong daughter named Annie (Anneliese Judge). And there’s Helen Decatur (Heather Headley), a powerhouse attorney who’s not waiting for a man to get on her level in order to start a family of her own.

How did Sweet Magnolias Season 1 end?

Lordy, it ended way back in May 2020 with a lot of cliffhangers. After calling it quits with her wishy-washy ex Ryan, Helen made the decision to go see a fertility doctor. She may even have a new man lined up in Erik, a chef from Sullivan’s. Speaking of Sullivan’s, Dana Sue is pressuring Ronnie to finalize their divorce so she can apply for a loan and buy out her old business partner. And Maddie and Cal had a misunderstanding when she thought that he wanted her son Ty to put baseball over college.

But the real reason you’ve gotta tune into Season 2 is that nail-biting car crash that closed out the season finale. We know that Kyle, Maddie’s middle child, was behind the wheel — but who was the passenger? Could it be Kyle’s brother Ty or his prom date Nellie? Could it be Dana Sue’s daughter Annie? Or could it be one of a number of other high school kids?

What can we expect in Sweet Magnolias Season 2?

Well, we gotta find out who else was in that terrible accident. Then maybe we can start thinking about the Sweet Magnolias’ love lives and career prospects. On top of all that, there’s the goings on of the town at large and a few other mysteries that need solving — like the mystery of Isaac’s parentage. One thing’s for sure: the ladies are gonna need a whole pitcher of margaritas to solve all these problems.

Season 2 of Sweet Magnolias is now streaming on Netflix.
