Sweet Magnolias Season 2 ending explained

Let’s start with Maddie Townsend (JoAnna Garcia Swisher). First of all, she got to tell her ex-husband Bill (Chris Klein) off after he told her that — surprise! — he’s the father of Peggy’s baby, a.k.a. Isaac (Chris Medlin). About halfway through the season, Isaac found out that his mom was newspaper reporter Peggy (Brittany L. Smith) and after a few episodes of nerves, Peggy told Bill about her high school pregnancy and stood proudly by her son, defying her powerful mother’s wishes.

But back to Maddie — ! She also found out that her current boyfriend, the dreamy ex-pro baseball player Cal Maddox (Justin Bruening), had to go to rehab for anger management years ago. Not just that, he also lost his temper way back when and punched out his ex’s new man. And in order to get revenge on Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen for spearheading a recall vote, the mayor’s wife Mary Vaughn Lewis (Allison Gabriel) told the school board about Cal’s past troubles and they all voted to remove him from his position as baseball coach. Making matters worse, one of Cal’s superfans from his professional baseball days came to Serenity looking to fight on his hero’s behalf. But when the fan wouldn’t listen to Cal and just leave Sullivan’s restaurant, he got pushy and shovey — and Cal had to deck the guy to keep him from getting even more rowdy… and Cal was swiftly arrested.

Oh, speaking of Mary Vaughn and the mayor, she’s extended her vendetta against the Magnolias to her children, Jackson (Sam Ashby) and Nellie (Simone Lockhart). That’s gonna stir up a lot of trouble because Jackson’s dating Dana Sue’s daughter Annie (Anneliese Judge) and Nellie’s dating Maddie’s son Kyle (Logan Allen). And while Nellie’s planning on playing by her mom’s rules (after giving Kyle his first kiss, of course), Jackson ain’t gonna be so obedient. Maddie’s other son Ty isn’t dating any of the mayor’s kids, but he does have a potential love interest in Annie’s friend Lily (Artemis). He’s also moved past his dream of being a professional baseball player since his injury’s still keeping him off the field — and he’s surprisingly okay with that.

Now let’s talk about Dana Sue Sullivan (Brooke Elliott). She helped get the recall vote going and her daughter’s dating the mayor’s son. She also did some work on herself and got back together with her estranged and reformed husband Ronnie (Brandon Quinn). He’s moving back into the house, too! There are changes ahead for Dana Sue, both good and bad. There’s the good: town legend Miss Frances left Dana Sue a huge chunk of change in her will, for reasons that are not yet clear. There’s the bad: some lady named Kathy (Wynn Everett) is back in town and has a major, major score to settle with Dana Sue. What’s her damage??

Now, finally, let’s talk about Helen Decatur (Heather Headley). After spending a season getting closer and closer to chef Erik (Dion Johnstone), her ex Ryan (Michael Shenefelt) came back in town for his Aunt Frances’ funeral and just blew up everything Helen’s spent all summer building. The guy wants to get back together with Helen — he wants to marry Helen! He proposes to her in the final seconds of the finale. Will she say yes or will she stay with Erik? And also — will she finally realize that she’s the clear choice for Serenity’s new mayor, should Mayor Townsend get the chop?

All of these questions have got to be answered in Sweet Magnolias Season 3 — and here’s hoping we don’t have to wait two years for it.
