‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Announces May Premiere Date on Disney+

May the force be with Disney+, which has just announced the official release day of their upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series. The Star Wars Universe show will release in, shocker, May — but not May the 4th, believe it or not. The Ewan McGregor-led spinoff series is set to debut on May 25, Disney CEO Bob Chapek announced during today’s earnings call.

Of note, though this is not the official Star Wars holiday May The 4th, May 25, 2022 does mark the 45th anniversary of the release of the original Star Wars movie, so there is still a bit of a celebration aspect there.

Right after the big announcement, the official Star Wars Twitter account also shared a first look image at the series, in which Obi-Wan treks through a dessert. McGregor will return to play the Jedi master, picking up the role 10 years after Revenge of the Sith.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is set to follow the titular Jedi after he moves to Tatooine and picks up the name “Ben,” which all occurs after Anakin Skywalker assumes his new identity as Darth Vader. Alongside McGregor, Hayden Christensen is set to return as Sith Lord Darth Vader.

Alongside Christensen and McGregor, Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse will also return to the franchise as Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru. In addition, the cast includes Moses Ingram, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, and Benny Safdie.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is executive-produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Deborah Chow, Ewan McGregor and Joby Harold. The series is written by Joby Harold and will be directed by Deborah Chow.

Obi-Wan Kenobi marks the fourth Disney+ original series set in the Star Wars Universe. Alongside the upcoming saga, the streamer has also released The Mandalorian, Star Wars: The Bad Batch, and just aired its finale for The Book of Boba-Fett. After Obi-Wan Kenobi, the streamer has announced upcoming projects such as Andor, Ahsoka, as well as new seasons of both The Mandalorian and The Bad Batch.
