Steven Spielberg’s ‘West Side Story’ To Premiere on Disney+ and HBO Max March 2

Something’s coming, something good… to streaming! Steven Spielberg‘s acclaimed West Side Story adaptation will debut on Disney+ and HBO Max on Wednesday, March 2.

This news comes just a day after West Side Story nabbed seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress for Ariana DeBose.

Based on the Tony-winning 1957 musical of the same name, Spielberg’s West Side Story stars Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler as Tony and Maria, two young star-crossed lovers in this New York City retelling of Romeo and Juliet. Rounding out the cast are David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Brian d’arcy James, Corey Stoll, Josh Andrés Rivera, and Rita Moreno.

While many were skeptical that this new film could live up to the legendary 1961 adaptation, it’s managed to win over both critics and Academy voters. Plus, EGOT-winner Moreno (who won an Oscar for playing Anita in the original film) returned as Valentina, a crucial new figure in Tony and Maria’s journey. Not too shabby!

Until then, the only place to watch West Side Story is in a theater (you can find a showing near you here).

In the meantime, though, you can still go behind-the-scenes of the film with the ABC special Something’s Coming: West Side Story — A Special Edition of 20/20, which is currently available to stream on Disney+. Happy streaming, Sharks and Jets!
