Director of Ana de Armas-led Marilyn Monroe Biopic Riots Over NC-17 Rating: “If the Audience Doesn’t Like It, That’s the F*cking Audience’s Problem”

Netflix‘s Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde is facing controversy again, thanks to its scandalous NC-17 rating. What would be Netflix’s first title with the adult rating is facing pushback from the film’s director, Andrew Dominik, who calls the potential rating “a bunch of horsesh*t.” Why? This could be commercially prohibitive for the Ana de Armas-led film, which the director says will hit theaters exclusively for eight months before dropping on the streamer.

In an expletive-filled interview with Screen Daily, the director teased what’s to come with Blonde: “It’s a demanding movie. If the audience doesn’t like it, that’s the fucking audience’s problem. It’s not running for public office,” Dominik asserted. ”It’s an NC-17 movie about Marilyn Monroe, it’s kind of what you want, right? I want to go and see the NC-17 version of the Marilyn Monroe story.”

Well, that may be a hard task to accomplish, considering some theaters have restrictions in place regarding the showing of NC-17 films. Nevertheless, Blonde was shot in 2019 and has the picture locked after Netflix “insisted” on hiring Tenet editor Jennifer Lame onto the project “to curb the excesses of the movie.” According to Screen Daily’s report, there will be a rape scene as noted in the 2000 Joyce Carol Oates book of the same name.

As for De Armas’ performance, Dominik stated that there was “work involved” in making the Cuban actress “sound American.” Still, he says that “she is fucking amazing – the one thing nobody’s going to complain about is [de Armas’] performance.”

Further praise went to Netflix, who still managed to support the title even amidst having issues with some of the content. Dominik went on to add that the movie wouldn’t have even been created if it weren’t for the support for both Netflix and the #MeToo movement.

“It’s much easier to support stuff when you like it. It’s much harder when you don’t. I have nothing but gratitude for Netflix,” he said, adding that before this film “nobody was interested in that sort of shit – what it’s like to be an unloved girl, or what it’s like to go through the Hollywood meat-grinder.”

As of now, Blonde does not have a Netflix release date or any further information. Stay tuned for more details on the Marilyn Monroe biopic.
