New Movies On Demand: ‘Red Rocket,’ ‘The Matrix Resurrections,’ ‘Summer Of Soul,’ + More

Whether you’re in the mood for porn stars in search of a new life, or a triumph of the spirit-type kids movie, you’ve got options with this week’s new movies on VOD. First up, Simon Rex stars in Red Rocket, a story of a cunning ex-porn star who’s trying to make a life for himself in his hometown after being gone for years. InThe Tiger Rising, Queen Latifah, Dennis Quaid and Katharine McPhee star in the film adaptation of the beloved Kate DiCamillo children’s book.

Now that the Oscar nominations are out, now’s the time to catch up on all of the nominees, like Summer of Soul, the documentary directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson that’s up for Best Documentary Feature. The film, about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, a six-week-long event that took place in New York City and featured acts like Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, and The Staple Singers and has come to be known as Black Woodstock.

The Matrix Resurrections, which was released on HBO Max last year, is also up for an Oscar, in this case the film is nominated for Best Visual Effects, and it’s now available on VOD as well. The fourth installment of the Matrix series reunites Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss with director Lana Wachowski in an attempt to conclude the story of Neo. If ’90s nostalgia is back in full swing, this movie is simultaneously an homage to and a reboot of it.

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

Red Rocket

When we here at Decider reviewed Red Rocket earlier this week, we went so far as to call the Sean Baker movie the best film of 2021. Simon Rex, the former MTV VJ turned actor turned rapper stars as Mikey, a porn star who, after spending a decade and a half in L.A., is now broke and returns home to Texas to crash on his estranged wife’s couch. A perpetual scammer, Mikey promises it will only be a brief stay, but he charms his wife, Lexi (Bree Elrod) to let him stay. He eventually finds his way back into her bed, which is a problem, because he also finds his way into the bed of a local teenager named Strawberry (Suzanna Son). The film avoids becoming too grim thanks to the tragicomic performance Rex gives throughout the whole thing.

The Tiger Rising

The Tiger Rising is the latest book-turned-movie from author Kate DiCamillo, whose past works have included Flora & Ulysses, The Tale of Despereaux, and Because of Winn-Dixie. In the new film, a young. grief-stricken and bullied boy named Rob (Christian Convery) who discovers a caged tiger in the woods near his house. With the help of his friend Sistine (Madalen Mills) and Willie Mae (Queen Latifah), a maid who unfortunately plays into the magical Negro trope, Rob makes a plan to set the tiger free. (And thus set himself free? Ahh, metaphors!)
