New Movies on Demand: ‘The Souvenir Part II,’ ‘Sundown,’ ‘Pursuit’ + More

Whether you’re looking for lots of action, or reflective, personal memoirs, we’ve got you covered with this week’s new movies on VOD. John Cusack and Emile Hirsch star in Pursuit, an action-thriller about a hacker who’s desperate to find his kidnapped wife, while Honor Swinton Byrne stars in Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir Part II, which is a continuation of her 2019 film The Souvenir, based on Hogg’s life as a young film student dealing the grief after her drug-addicted boyfriend dies.

And if slowly-played mysteries are your bag, check out Tim Roth and Charlotte Gainsbourg in Sundown. The two actors play Neil and Alice, siblings who are on vacation in Acapulco with her grown children, when suddenly they’re called home when they learn of a death in their family. Upon arriving at the airport though, Neil *claims* to have lost his passport and sends the rest of his family back to England while he stays back in Mexico for reasons unknown. As he farts around on the beach drinking beers, his family wonders why he’s not returning home, and that’s the mystery that lingers and moves the story along almost to the very end.

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

Pursuit

One of John Cusack’s best movies was 1997’s Grosse Pointe Blank, where he starred as a hit-man who returns to his hometown just in time for his high school reunion. The movie falls into my most favorite film genre, “funny action movie,” (while also managing to be a rom-rom), and it marked his first foray into real action in an attempt to broaden his legacy beyond Lloyd Dobler. Eventually he’d star in explosion-filled flicks like Con Air, The Thin Red Line, and 2012, and his latest movie, Pursuit, is another entry into the Cusack-shoot-’em-up. In it, Cusack plays a crime boss whose son, Calloway (Emile Hirsch), a face-tatted hacker, has messed with the wrong people and now his wife has been kidnapped by a drug cartel. In an effort to find his wife, Calloway realizes that maybe his own father is one of the wrong people he’s messed with.

The Souvenir Part II

The Souvenir films remind me of another film franchise, the “Before” trilogy that stars Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, where each subsequent movie serves for us to get to know and grow with the characters, but there is no great cliffhanger from the previous film that leaves us hanging, we are simply just watching people as they get older, have new experiences, and process what’s happening in their lives. 2019’s The Souvenir, directed by Joanna Hogg, starred Honor Swinton Byrne as Julie, a film student who is something of a stand-in for Hogg, and goes through much of what Hogg herself experienced in film school, as she tried to weave the stories of her creative process in with a doomed love story. The Souvenir Part II picks up where that first film left off, after the death of Julie’s boyfriend from the first film, and the loss has made her question her creative process even more. Swinton Byrne’s real-life mother, Tilda Swinton plays her mother in the film and is, as always, a treasure.
