‘Outlander’ Prequel Series In Development at Starz

Starz is blessing the world with more Outlander news, just as Season 6 rolls around the corner. The show, which is set to return in just a little over a week, now has a prequel series in development, Variety reports. Outlander showrunner and executive producer Matthew B. Roberts has reportedly been attached to write and executive produce the new series. Finally, it seems this long “droughtlander” is really over.

A writers’ room is currently being assembled, with an eye to begin work in a few weeks, though exact plot details are still under wraps. Ronald D. Moore, who developed the original Outlander series for television, will also executive produce along with Maril Davis under their Tall Ship Production banner. Following suit with Outlander, Sony Pictures Television will be the studio.

Outlander is based on the ongoing novel series of the same name written by Diana Gabaldon. Recently, the author teased in a Facebook post that she’s working on a prequel novel about Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, who raised Outlander main character Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Gabaldon also published the prequel novella Virgins in 2013 as part of the Dangerous Women anthology. Virgins followed a young Jamie Fraser and Ian Murray in 1740s France. At this time, there’s no indication as to whether the prequel series would follow either of these stories.

Season 6 of Outlander is due to premiere on Starz in early March, finally debuting after a series of production delays due to COVID-19. Season 6 of the beloved show will be based on the book A Breath of Snow and Ashes, and will consist of eight episodes. A seventh season of Outlander has already been greenlit, set to follow An Echo in the Bone with a boost to 16 episodes.

Outlander Season 6 will debut on all Starz platforms at 9 p.m. ET on March 6, 2022. Stay tuned for more updates about the show’s prequel series in development.
