‘Arthur’ Creator Says Live-Action Film Starring John Legend Might Be Possible

While the PBS series Arthur may have just recently came to an end after 25 seasons, the show’s creators may not be ready to let go of their celebrated aardvark character just yet.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, creator Marc Brown and executive producer Carol Greenwald discussed potential future plans for the franchise, including a live-action film starring John Legend as a top choice.

The final episode of Arthur gave fans a look at what the show’s characters would look like as adults. While this seemed like a fitting ending, the rise of reboots of popular television shows has given the Arthur team something to think about. It appears the show’s creator isn’t opposed to expanding on the grown-up storyline.

“[My son] had this idea several years ago about wouldn’t it be interesting to do a live-action version of Arthur,” said Brown, whose son has long served as a producer on the cartoon. “I couldn’t wrap my head around it completely, but it’s an intriguing thought. There might be a feature film in the works soon, too, about Arthur… The subject matter is very timely, and maybe there is even a really interesting person involved… I mean, if I could pick one person I would love to be a part of this project, it might be John Legend.”

Brown added that he tried to create a full-length Arthur feature about 15 years ago, but production complications forced him to “pull the plug” on the project. Legend had sported an Arthur costume back in 2018 and the attire seemed to suit him well (see photo above).

Arthur has earned the title of longest-running children’s cartoon in US history, and one of the country’s longest-running animated series overall, second only to The Simpsons. PBS Kids plans to air reruns of the popular cartoon for the foreseeable future.
