‘The Batman’ First Reviews: Matt Reeves’ Film “Rules” and Robert Pattison is “Broodiest, Most Disarmingly Sensitive Bat-boy Yet”

DC‘s caped crusader will return this weekend when The Batman releases in theaters. The film’s review embargo lifted earlier this afternoon, and stellar reviews have begun to pour in, celebrating Matt Reeves‘ new addition to the stacked collection of existing Batman movies. Now, how are we going to make it through the week to see this movie? Only five more days!

Currently, the film stands at a fresh 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, only leading to more anticipation for the flick. Critics rolled into Twitter today to share in their excitement for worldwide audiences to witness Reeves’ creation.

“The Batman is unlike any other Batman film before it. The plot is grounded in reality, even more so than Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy,” critic Scott Menzel shared. “#TheBatman is more of a detective story rather than a superhero film. The cast is v. good with Colin Ferrell & Paul Dano being the film’s MVPs.”

Robert Pattinson stars as the titular role in the upcoming film, accompanied by Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as The Riddler, Barry Keoghan as Officer Stanley Merkel, and Colin Farrell as The Penguin. Folks have already taken to Farrell and Dano’s masterfully evil villains, as well as Pattinson’s new rendition on the beloved vigilante.

“THE BATMAN rules,” Slash Film critic Hoai-Tran Bui shared. “Robert Pattinson is our broodiest, most disarmingly sensitive Bat-boy yet. Frame this movie for me!!”

There have, however, been some critiques of the film, which has been targeted for its “copaganda.” Critics have noted that some moments feel a bit slanted towards the police, with folks like Commissioner Gordon and the Gotham Police earning some time in the spotlight.

“Re: the copaganda accusations around THE BATMAN, there’s one scene in the film (it involves a nightclub and a perp walk),” Rolling Stone critic David Fear shared, “where I thought, This will either be the most inspiring scene for half the audience and the single scariest image in the entire movie for the other.”

The Batman will release in theaters this Friday, March 4, and be available to stream on HBO Max 45 days afterwards on April 19. Scroll up to watch the trailer for The Batman.
