Stephen Colbert Handles Hilarious Slip-up During Live ‘Late Show’ Monologue Following State of the Union: “Nothing Like A Live Show”

Live TV — there’s nothing like it! Just look at how Stephen Colbert handled a hilarious gaffe during his live The Late Show monologue following President Joe Biden‘s State of the Union.

“Biden touted his COVID response,” Colbert said, as a clip played of the president pledging that the Department of Justice would name a chief prosecutor for pandemic fraud.

“Wow,” the late night host said. “I didn’t know Joe was in the cast…”

Colbert suddenly broke off laughing, realizing his monologue mistake in real time.

“We’ve skipped ahead in our video a bit,” he explained, laughing. “We’ve never made a live mistake before, so… This is how the sausage is made, ladies and gentleman. But rarely do we let live cameras in.”

Luckily, The Late Show‘s producers got the right clip on their second try. In it, Biden called attention to the antiviral pills he’d ordered to treat COVID.

“I’ve ordered more pills than anybody in the world,” he says. “Wow, I didn’t know Joe was cast in the next season of Euphoria,” Colbert said, referencing HBO’s popular series about teen addiction.

The late night host immediately celebrated upon finally getting his timing right, saying, “There you go! Boom! Oh! Oh! Nothing like a live show, ladies and gentlemen.”

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35/10:35c on CBS.
