Who Is Elizabeth Holmes?

Welcome to one of the most interesting stories Silicon Valley has to offer. In 2003, Holmes founded and became the CEO of the health technology company Theranos, which claimed it could conduct blood tests using little more than a drop of blood. The company quickly became a startup darling due to its blood testing machines. By 2015, Forbes had named Holmes the youngest and wealthiest self-made billionaire ever thanks to Theranos’ $9 billion valuation. But it was all too good to be true. The blood testing machines never worked. It was later found that Holmes and her company routinely released misleading validation reports, faked demonstrations, and made misleading claims about contracts all to boost their valuation.

In January of this year, Holmes was found guilty on four counts of defrauding investors, three counts of wire fraud, and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. However, she was found not guilty on charges of defrauding patients. Sentencing is scheduled for September 26, 2022. For her crimes, Holmes could face up to 20 years in prison.
