HBO Denies Claims Of Toxic Work Environment On ‘Euphoria’ Set

Say what you want about HBO’s Euphoria, which ended its second season complete with as much sexual content, drugs, and violence as fans have come to expect, and in some cases, even pay tribute to on TikTok. But HBO insists you don’t say the filming environment was equally toxic to the content of the series.

A report in The Daily Beast today cited unnamed sources involved in the production of the show, as well as actors who served as background extras, claiming rampant disorganization and abuse that resulted in multiple complaints to their SAG-AFTRA union reps. Many of the complaints revolved around leaving the actors and crew in the lurch. Lack of meals, bathrooms, heating. Lack of direction due to a lack of shot lists. All of which made working conditions untenable when shoot days lasted past 18 hours.

Earlier this season, two of the show’s high-profile actresses, Sydney Sweeney and Minka Kelly, spoke up about pushing back on filming unnecessary and gratuitous nude scenes this season.

HBO, for its part, responded with the following statement: “The well-being of cast and crew on our productions is always a top priority. The production was in full compliance with all safety guidelines and guild protocols. It’s not uncommon for drama series to have complex shoots, and COVID protocols add an additional layer. We maintain an open line of communication with all the guilds, including SAG-AFTRA. There were never any formal inquiries raised.”

For his part, cast member Jacob Elordi told Variety this week that putting in hard work and long hours was worth the result. “I mean that in the broad sense, like this is filmmaking. And whilst you shouldn’t suffer, to me there’s great value in working hard. And for every hour that I’ve personally put in on that set, I can see it when I watch the show, and I can feel it when I’m walking on the street and people love the show,” he said. “For me, working long hours is like the greatest joy. And they take care of us. That’s my family. If I’m working long hours, Sam’s working twice as long, Zendaya’s working three times as long. We’re all in it together.”
