‘Outlander’ Season 7: Everything We Know So Far

Starz has a massive hit on its hands with its sexy time travel series Outlander, which just began its sixth season this week (here’s how to watch). And despite the fact that it has only just started, fans naturally want to know whether Outlander season six will be its last. Here’s what we do know (and what we don’t) about the future of Outlander.

Will there be a season 7 of Outlander?

Starz confirmed in 2021 that Outlander has been renewed for a seventh season. The show is based on the book series by author Diana Gabaldon, and season seven will consist of 16 episodes that will be based on the seventh Outlander book An Echo in the Bone.

When will Outlander season 7 premiere?

There is no confirmed premiere date yet for Outlander season 7. While the sixth season was shortened to just eight episodes, showrunner Matthew B. Roberts said that season seven will be “supersized” to make up for any time lost in season 6. “Filming in 2021 has presented an unprecedented set of challenges,” Roberts said in a statement last year. Those challenges, he says, “led us to the decision to truncate the season in order to bring the fans the most vibrant and dynamic season as soon as possible… We will then film an extended season seven with 16 episodes next year as life returns to normalcy.”

Outlander season 7 will film this year in Scotland, and a premiere date for the season has not been set but Deadline reports season seven will return “likely late 2022/early 2023.”

Is there going to be season 8 of Outlander?

There is no confirmation that Outlander will be renewed beyond season 7. The show’s leading actress, Caitríona Balfe has even hinted that season seven could be the last, saying, “We will have hit the almost 10-year mark by the end of [season 7], which feels like a nice kind of time frame, but we don’t know, those decisions are far above my pay grade.”

There are nine books in the Outlander series thus far, and Gabaldon has planned two write ten total books, so only time will tell if we’ll get to see the last three volumes adapted to the small screen. At the Television Critics’ Association press tour in January 2019, executive producer Maril Davis said in 2019, “We’ll keep making this until Claire and Jamie are a hundred…If Starz and Sony are willing, we’re willing, and if the actors are willing, we’ll keep going.” An Outlander prequel series is also currently in development at Starz.
