Hulu Adds Free Unlimited DVR For Live+TV Subscribers

Do any of you still DVR things? If so, then this news is for you! YouTube TV has offered free unlimited DVR capacity for subscribers since 2017, but Hulu has finally gotten wise to the recording gap, announcing a free-for-all deal for its 4.3 million Live+TV subscribers.

Hulu’s free Unlimited DVR for live TV customers goes into effect April 13, 2022.

“Hulu + Live TV is becoming even more valuable and attractive to consumers,” said Joe Earley, Hulu President. “Through one single subscription, users get access to 80+ live channels — including all the major broadcast networks — as well as Hulu, Disney+, ESPN+, and soon Unlimited DVR. Guided by our relentless focus on delivering the consumer a high-quality user experience, we will be one of the only pay TV providers — traditional or streaming — to offer this feature as part of the base plan at no additional cost.”

The unlimited aspect does still have a time limit, though: your recordings only last for nine months.

Current customers will receive 50 hours of DVR, or can pay $9.99 per month for 200 hours of Enhanced Cloud DVR, or $14.99 per month for Enhanced Cloud DVR + Unlimited Screens. Everyone will get the new unlimited DVR plan, and those customers on the older plans will transition into the new plan with the cost cut reflected in future bills.

In December, Hulu bundled Disney+ and ESPN+ into the Hulu + Live TV subscription package, while raising rates $5 to $69.99/month (with ads) or $75.99 (no ads). YouTube TV costs $64.99 per month, but doesn’t give you Disney+ or ESPN+.

Sling TV, one of the skinny SVOD providers, meanwhile offers 50 hours of DVR storage with base subscription packages, charging $5 per month to upgrade to 200 hours.
