Last we heard from D.B. Weiss, he was confirming his non-involvement in any of the Game of Thrones spinoffs for HBO. But it turns out Weiss was turning an old screenplay back up to 11, as we have our first look at Metal Lords, directed by Peter Sollett (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) off of a script by Weiss, with music executive-produced by Tom Morello, the guitarist from Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave. It’s coming to Netflix on April 8.

Oh, and it’s a comedy.

Metal Lords is about two high-schoolers (Jaeden Martell and Adrian Greensmith) who start a metal band, recruiting a female cellist (Isis Hainsworth) to round out their trio in an attempt to win the local Battle of the Bands.

Also in the Metal Lords cast is Brett Gelman (Fleabag) and Sufe Bradshaw (Veep) as school staffers, so you know it’ll be funny. Not seen in the trailer: Joe Manganiello (True Blood), but we know dude has range from co-starring with Pee-wee Herman in Pee-wee’s Netflix movie.

It’s not a completely wild idea for Weiss to explore metal music. After all, he did get band members from Mastodon to play wildlings in one episode of GoT, and White Walkers in another. OK, so GoT also employed Ed Sheeran for a cameo, but still. That said, Morello brings legit rock bona fides to the ball. And he and Weiss apparently bonded while picking up their respective children at the same school.

“I grew up in a small, cloistered, conservative suburb where my musical tastes ran against the grain of almost everybody else in school and certainly all of the teachers, so this is something I can very much relate to,” Morello told Billboard. “It’s a story of kids trying to get their first band together and having a dream, but perhaps not having the technical ability or the artistic vision to make that dream real. Or do they? For me, it harmonizes in a lot of ways with the real story of so many kids who are locked in these suburban hells and the key to get out is an electric guitar or drums or rock and roll music. The music shows a way to transcend this stifled daily existence, to try to be something better, be something more authentic and true than what’s handed to you by your surroundings.”

Metal Lords premieres April 8, 2022, on Netflix.
