‘The Walking Dead’ Exclusive: Will Maggie Join The Commonwealth?

Will Maggie (Lauren Cohan) join The Commonwealth on The Walking Dead? It seems like sort of an obvious question to answer, given we’ve seen a flash-forward to several months from “now” with Maggie’s Hilltop in a showdown with a cadre of Commonwealth soldiers, led by none other than Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus). But as you can see in Decider’s exclusive clip from this week’s episode, “The Lucky Ones”, it seems like Maggie is at least considering the possibility.

In the episode, written by Vivian Tse and directed by Tawnia McKiernan, Commonwealth Governor Pamela Milton (Laila Robins) is taking a tour of Alexandria, Oceanside and Hilltop to see if they merit joining up with the far more advanced society. Alexandria seems like a no-brainer based on what we’ve seen before… Aaron (Ross Marquand) has been positively desperate to get their help. Oceanside is a question mark, as usual.

And as for Hilltop? When we find Maggie and Pamela in the scene, they’re sitting in the woods discussing high level ideas about how to run a government.

“Think that’s called an autocracy,” Maggie says when we cut in on the scene, opening up about her view on The Commonwealth.

“No, it’s not,” Pamela shoots back. “Liberties haven’t gone anywhere. You’re the leader at Hilltop. You make the decisions. Do you consider yourself an autocrat?”

The issue, the way Maggie sees it, is that Pamela drives a nicer car, and lives “in a nicer house than everybody else,” while Pamela just sees that as a way of making people strive for something better. Basically, Pamela has the classic “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” philosophy, while Maggie wants to lead by example.

But by the end of the scene, the cordial philosophical pondering is interrupted by the way of the world, with two walkers approaching the women. Pamela takes the one behind Maggie; Maggie takes the one behind Pamela. And more than any high-end debate, it makes the point clear: you watch my back, and I’ll watch yours.

You can watch the rest of the scene above, and The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC, and streams a week early on AMC+.
