‘Inventing Anna’ Cons Its Way to the Top of Nielsen’s Streaming Chart

In its second week on Netflix, Inventing Anna has quickly surged past everything else on streaming, clocking more than twice as many minutes of viewing time than anything else in Nielsen’s latest report.

The nine-episode series, based on real-life con artist Anna Delvey (the alias of Russian-born Anna Sorokin, who may or may not already have been deported back to Germany), attracted more than 3.283 billion minutes of viewing time for the week ending Feb. 20, according to Nielsen’s Weekly Streaming Top 10. The next closest in popularity among viewers? Netflix’s Love Is Blind, with 1.439 billion minutes of viewing after dropping Season 2 on Feb. 11.

But the Julia Garner starring vehicle jumped 169 percent in viewing time from its debut week. That compares to the kind of word-of-mouth buzz that bolstered previous Netflix hits Squid Game and Tiger King.

The week’s other big premiere, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Prime Video, released the first two episodes of season 4 on Feb. 18, and was rewarded with 499 million minutes of viewing (ranking 10th overall for the week).

And Disney+’s Encanto lodged its ninth straight week with more than 1 billion viewing minutes, continuing to outpace all other streaming movies by miles. Ranking third in overall viewing for the week of Feb. 20, these kinds of numbers means little kids and their parents are watching and singing about Bruno tens of millions of times each week of 2022 so far.

Elsewhere…

  • Ozark and Sweet Magnolias remained popular among viewers on Netflix (fourth and sixth in overall minutes), with 1.083 billion and 898 million minutes, respectively.
  • Reacher on Prime Video dropped down below the billion mark in its third week, to 935 million (and fifth overall).
  • Disney+’s The Book of Boba Fett dropped off viewership 2.5 times in the week after the finale, from 885 million minutes to 339 million.
  • The return of Netflix’s Space Force for season 2 on Feb. 18 netted 438 million minutes overall, eighth among original streaming series.
  • Hulu didn’t make any of the Top 10 charts that week.
  • As far as the biggest new movie released to streaming, that’d be Netflix’s 2022 version of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which chased down 303 million minutes, fifth among movies.
