‘Maury’ Is Calling It Quits After 30 Seasons

The popular daytime talk show Maury is calling it quits after 30 overall seasons on NBC.

Hosted by Maury Povich, the show—which is famous for airing reruns throughout the day—typically invites dysfunctional guests to appear who submit to paternity tests that deliver shocking results.

The NBCUniversal series will halt original productions this year, following a decision from Povich to retire, according to The Hollywood Reporter. New episodes will continue to be broadcast through September, with reruns continuing indefinitely in syndication.

The show was first billed as The Maury Povich Show in 1991 before shortening its name to Maury in 1998. It has been known for its risqué topics, including the revealing of paternity test results, synonymous with Povich’s trademark saying “You are not the father!” After the results are read, viewers can typically witness some on-stage pageantry by one of the anxious guests.

Maury has made a significant impact on pop culture along with several similar shows including Jerry Springer and The Montel Williams Show. Povich, now 83, once played himself on How I Met Your Mother as well as in the film Madea’s Big Happy Family. He also previously hosted the entertainment newsmagazine A Current Affair.

“They touch so many classic themes, whether it’s love, distrust, conflict, drama,” Povich said to the Chicago Tribune in 2012 about why he felt the show was so compelling. “And the paternity shows in particular, you’ve got he-said, she-said, is-he-the-father, isn’t-he. While soap operas play those themes out over six months, we play them out over 12 minutes.”
