Rachel Zegler Has Been Invited to The Oscars After All — As a Presenter

Phew! Following a wave of Internet backlash over the revelation that West Side Story star Rachel Zegler wasn’t invited to the Oscars, the Hollywood Reporter has learned that the 20-year-old star is headed to Hollywood’s biggest night after all… as a presenter!

Zegler is currently in London filming Disney’s live-action Snow White remake. According to THR, the production is working on rearranging the shooting schedule so the actress can attend the Los Angeles-based ceremony.

Although Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story adaptation is a major awards contender and Zegler plays main character Maria, fans were shocked to learn that the actress originally wasn’t invited to attend the event.

She first shared the news in an Instagram comment on Sunday, replying to a fan asking what she’d be wearing to the Oscars. “I’m not invited so sweatpants and my boyfriend’s flannel,” she wrote at the time.

“Idk y’all I have tried it all but it doesn’t seem to be happening,” Zegler added in another comment. “I will root for West Side Story from my couch and be proud of the work we so tirelessly did 3 years ago. I hope some last minute miracle occurs and I can celebrate our film in person but hey, that’s how it goes sometimes, I guess.”

West Side Story received seven nominations at this year’s Oscars — Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Director (for Spielberg), Best Production Design, Best Sound, Best Supporting Actress (for Ariana DeBose), and Best Picture.

From cutting crucial awards from the live telecast to questionable COVID policies, it’s been a rough year for the Oscars. Oh, well — at least they’re getting by with some help from Maria herself!
