The Senate confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson are fully underway, and you can rest assured that the ladies of The View are ON IT. Today’s opening Hot Topics segment put the spotlight on the historic nomination of KBJ, and the various lines of questioning she received yesterday from both sides of the fence.
The always fashionable Whoopi Goldberg — sporting a sweatshirt that says “I’m not SOCIALLY AWKWARD … I just really like cats” — got things started today by praising KBJ for remaining a “pillar of strength” during the hearings, which she framed as a “third day of Republican attacks.” After presenting a clip from the hearings, Whoopi was quickly interrupted by Joy Behar, who turned the topic of conversation from KBJ to ACB (Amy Coney Barrett) by suggesting that the newest member of the SCOTUS was “lacking” when it came to her qualifications.
Things pivoted to a clip of Democratic Senator Cory Booker’s emotional praise of KBJ, and the plight of Black women everywhere, which led to Jackson dabbing tears away from her eyes with a tissue — one of the lasting images from the early portion of these hearings, no doubt. Whoopi, however, did not spend time lavishing praise on either Booker or KBJ, instead accusing the Democrats of not doing enough to speak up for Jackson in the face of intense questioning from the right. Sara Haines didn’t take the bait, exactly, but instead criticized Dems for “failing to counter the misinformation,” giving a backhanded compliment to Republicans for the consistency with which they hammered their talking points into these hearings.
“Mostly lies,” a stern-faced Behar interjected.
“That’s gaslighting, dude!”, responded Haines. “They keep saying it until someone believes it.”
Contextualizing her accusations of gaslighting, Haines touched on the controversy surrounding Jackson’s ruling in a child pornography case she presided over. Haines feels like the persistent line of questioning from Republican circles on this topic served as a “dogwhistle to QAnon.”
Sunny Hostin concurred with the “disingenous” nature of the line of questioning, as well as the left’s response. “Democrats always seem to fall back on decency,” she opined. “You know, the old Michelle Obama ‘When they go low, we go high’? I think when they ‘go low,’ we need to go to the Earth’s crust.” This earned a spirited round of applause from the amped-up audience, but Hostin couldn’t resist the urge to attempt an impromptu follow-up, awkwardly adding “We need to get small, like an ant.” (Huh?) As you might expect, the confused audience promptly sat on their hands.
One of those sayings could sell a lot of t-shirts, is all we’re saying. The other? Time to go back to the drawing board … like an ant. (Huh?)
