Why Isn’t Lin-Manuel Miranda At The Oscars 2022?

The 2022 Oscars might be Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s chance to get an EGOT—that is, his chance to add an Oscar to his shelf with his Emmy, Grammy, and Tony—but the Hamilton composer won’t be there to collect his award in person.

On Saturday afternoon, the day before the 94th Academy Award ceremony, Miranda tweeted that he would not be attending the 2022 Oscars. Why? Because his wife, Vanessa Nadal, tested positive for COVID-19. Though Miranda himself said he tested negative, he opted to skip the awards ceremony, “out of caution.”

“She’s doing fine,” Miranda wrote of his wife’s condition. “Kids & I have tested ➖ [sic], but out of caution, I won’t be going to the Oscars tomorrow night. Cheering for my TickTickBoom & Encanto families w my own family, alongside all of you, ALL of you.”

Miranda, who wrote the Encanto soundtrack, is nominated for Best Original Song nomination for Encanto’s “Dos Oruguitas.” The movie is also nominated for Best Animated Feature. Miranda’s 2021 directorial debut, a film adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s Tick, Tick Boom, is also nominated for two Academy Awards—Best Editing, and Best Actor for star Andrew Garfield.

Miranda fans have long been anticipating the composer joining the ranks of the few artists who have an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony, aka the EGOT. On top of that, Miranda also won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Hamilton in 2016, meaning that if Miranda does win an Oscar, he will actually have a PEGOT. (Only two artists have achieved such an accomplishment: Richard Rodgers, and Marvin Hamlisch.) It’d be a shame for this crowning achievement to go without a speech—but of course, Miranda had to think of safety first. We’re certain that if he does win, Miranda will treat his Twitter followers to something special nonetheless.
