Beyoncé Kicks off the 2022 Oscars With Glorious “Be Alive” Performance

The 2022 Oscars kicked off not with a monologue mocking the nominated films of the year, but a Beyoncé Knowles performance. The global superstar performed her Oscar-nominated song “Be Alive” from the movie King Richard for the first time ever live from Compton, California. The song, which was co-written by Beyoncé and Dixson, is one of five songs nominated for Best Song from a Motion Picture tonight. Queen Bee’s performance, adorned with a cool tennis green motif, a supporting orchestra, and backup singers sporting Venus and Serena Williams‘s trademark ’90s braids. It was a visually stunning performance that broke the mold of usual Oscar performances and brought Beyoncé’s trademark genius to the Academy Awards.

The 94th Annual Academy Awards kicked off from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles with tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams introducing Beyoncé’s performance. The Williams sisters are there in support of Oscar-nominated film King Richard, which is a loving biopic about their father Richard Williams’s fight to raise champions in Compton. Will Smith is considered the heavy favorite to win the Best Actor Oscar for his turn as Richard Williams and Aunjanue Ellis is also nominated for Best Supporting Actress for playing the Williams family matriarch, Oracene “Brandy” Price.

“Be Alive” marks Beyoncé’s first ever Oscar nomination. She is up for the Best Song award alongside heavy hitters like Billie Eilish and Finneas for James Bond theme “No Time to Die” and Lin-Manuel Miranda for Encanto song “Dos Oruguitas.” However, by kicking off the Oscars with a Beyoncé award, the Academy ceded its platform for Queen Bee to gift us yet another gorgeous visual masterpiece. (No, but like that “Be Alive” performance has got to be up there with Lemonade and her Coachella performance!)

Time will tell if Beyoncé takes home the Oscar, but she already definitely won the honor of having the all-time coolest Academy Awards opening.
