Is The Girl from Plainville Based on a True Story?

The death of Conrad Roy III is one of the oddest and most disturbing true crime cases in recent history. On July 13, 2014, Roy died by suicide after poisoning himself with carbon monoxide fumes. For a period of time, that was the extent of this sad story. But as Michelle Carter — the girlfriend at the time none of his friends knew about — became more involved, the story changed. It was discovered through the couple’s texts that Carter had repeatedly urged Roy to kill himself.

Carter was indicted in February of 2015. Four years later in 2019, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that Carter acted with criminal intent when she encouraged Roy to end his life. She was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and given a 15-month prison sentence. In January of 2020, Carter was released from prison early due to good conduct. She ultimately served 11 months and 12 days of her full sentence.

Many believe that this case could set a legal precedent. Commonwealth vs. Michelle Carter imposed criminal charges on a person for encouraging someone else to commit suicide. Though U.S. law doesn’t allow lower-court decisions to bind other courts, some believe this case alerted the courts to new ways crimes can be committed in the digital age.
