Ever find yourself staring wistfully out into the horizon, wondering what’s going on with that Bridgerton spin-off about young Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel). Do you find yourself pining to learn more about how Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh) stepped out of the shadows and into the light as a young lady? And did seeing Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell) breakdown over the death of her beloved Edmund (Rupert Evans) make you yearn to see how they fell in love in the first place?

Have no fear, the Shondaland Bridgerton spin-off is still coming to Netflix. Bridgerton star Golda Rosheuvel confirmed it’s not only still happening, but that she will reprise her role as Queen Charlotte in the series.

“I know that I’m gonna be in it, which is a wonderful thing and I feel very, very blessed,” Rosheuvel told Decider. “I know that it’s an origin story so you’ll see the younger Queen Charlotte. I know that it’s still in the world of Bridgerton, which will be really fascinating to see how it all pans out to where we get to in Bridgerton.”

So it’s definitely happening. But who will show up in the series, when is it set, and what is the Bridgerton prequel even called? We don’t know much for sure about the Bridgerton prequel series on Netflix, but here’s everything we know so far…

Will There be a Bridgerton Spin-off? Everything We Know About the Bridgerton Prequel

Yes! There will be a Bridgerton Televisual Universe!

On May 14, 2021, Netflix announced that Shonda Rhimes would be writing an “all-new limited series based on the origins of Queen Charlotte…While the series will center on the rise and love life of a young Queen Charlotte, it will also tell the stories of young Violet Bridgerton and Lady Danbury.”

When Decider spoke to Golda Rosheuvel about Bridgerton Season 2, she was over the moon about the fact that Rhimes herself was penning the prequel series.” I’ve always loved everything that she’s done,” Rosheuvel said, revealing she watched Scandal while playing Othello on the London stage.

Adjoa Andoh also teased that “there will be many a sneak peek about what [Lady Danbury] was like when she was younger going forward.”

So we’re getting the story of how Queen Charlotte fell in love with King George, how Lady Danbury found the great love she told Kate about, and how Violet Ledger met and married Edmund Bridgerton.

Who is Starring in the Bridgerton Prequel Series?

On March 30, 2022, Netflix announced the first round of casting for the yet untitled Bridgerton spin-off series. In addition to confirming that Golda Rosheuvel would reprise her role as Queen Charlotte, Netflix also shared that Adjoa Andoh and Ruth Gemmell would appear as their Bridgerton characters in the series. Netflix also shared photos from the first script read-through.

However the big news was about who would play the younger versions of some of our favorite Bridgerton characters. Line of Duty alum India Amarteifio is playing Young Queen Charlotte. According to Netflix: “Betrothed to the mysterious King of England against her will, Charlotte arrives in London only to realize she was not exactly what the royals were expecting. As she learns to navigate the palace, the ‘ton and her unpredictable husband, she grows into one of Europe’s most unforgettable monarchs.”

Michelle Fairley, famous for playing Lady Catelyn Stark in Game of Thrones, will co-star as Princess Augusta, the Dowager Princess of Great Britain, while Sandman actor Corey Mylchreest will play Young King George. “Handsome, charismatic, and a bit of a mystery, George has always bowed to the restraints placed on him as the Crown. Until now. Having to share his space, and bed, with his new wife forces George to face his hidden demons head on,” Netflix said.

Arsema Thomas will play Young Agatha Danbury. Netflix shared this about our young Lady D: “Under the thumb of a much older husband, Agatha uses Charlotte’s arrival to find her own way into society. With keen knowledge of the once divided social scene and the intricacies of marriage, Agatha becomes a guiding light for the new Queen, all while finding her own voice and power we’ll soon recognize as Bridgerton’s iconic Lady Danbury.”

Other actors joining the cast include Sam Clemmett as Young Brimsley, Richard Cunningham as Lord Bute, Tunji Kasim as Adolphus, Rob Maloney as the Royal Doctor, Cyril Nri as Lord Danbury, and Hugh Sachs, who will reprise his Bridgerton role as Brimsley, the Queen’s most trusted servant.

Is the Bridgerton Prequel Based on the Julia Quinn Books?

We don’t know yet! That’s because Netflix has describe the show as an “all-new” limited series written by Shonda Rhimes. So this could all be solely from Rhimes’s imagination.

That said, Rhimes is an avowed Julia Quinn fan and has read all of the author’s Bridgerton books. So it stands to reason that Rhimes is also aware of The Rokesby series by Julia Quinn. Those books follow the previous generation of Bridgertons alongside their country house neighbors, the Rokesbys. That series kicks off with Because of Miss Bridgerton. The “Miss Bridgerton” in question is Billie Bridgerton, the Bridgerton siblings’ tomboy aunt. So it’s possible we might meet the characters who show up in The Rokesbys in Rhimes’s work. (But it’s also quite possible that we won’t!)

When Will The Bridgerton Prequel Series Premiere on Netflix?

Again, we don’t know! The show was announced in May 2021 and we saw evidence of the first table read in late March 2022. If they start filming in spring 2022, the earliest we could see the series would probably be in early 2023.

Anything Else We Know About the Bridgerton Prequel Series?

We know from Bridgerton that Charlotte and George’s love helped usher in a new wave of BIPOC nobility. The Duke of Hasting’s (Regé-Jean Page) father was one such newly raised noble. So we might see how society accepts these changes and meet the Duke’s parents as young people. (After all, Lady Danbury was the Duke’s mother’s best friend.)

We also know that Edmund Bridgerton was a rake in his youth, so look out for the Bridgerton daddy flirting his way through the ton. (In the books, Violet is revealed to have been something of a wallflower; their union was surprising to people!)

In Season 2, we also learn that Lady Mary Sheffield (Shelley Conn) was the diamond of her season back in the day and courted controversy when she fell in love with a clerk named Sharma. So maybe that will play out in the background of the show?

Besides that, expect lavish costumes, spectacular scenery, and the juicy storytelling that made Shonda Rhimes a TV titan.
