‘Jeopardy!’ Contestant Loses Game, but Wins Over “Delusional” Mets Fans With Wildly Incorrect Answer

If you were sad for Mike Janela when he didn’t end up winning last night’s episode of Jeopardy!, you were probably even more brokenhearted for him to learn that the Astoria-based sportscaster is a long-suffering Mets fan. Still, Janela seemed determined to turn any frowns upside in yesterday’s game, as he entered Final Jeopardy! in third place before betting small — whilst going big — with his answer.

The final clue was: “Patented in 1955, it did not go over well in the high-end fashion world but the then-new aerospace industry found it very useful.” While the correct response was “What is velcro?”, Janela’s answer was entertaining and affable enough to win over both the in-studio crowd and viewers at home. He wrote: “What is I’m going to lose but the Mets will win it all this year!?”

While Janela ultimately finished in second place, walking away with $2,000, he clearly completely won over his fellow Mets fans. He also won over many viewers with his personal anecdote about visiting the Jeopardy! stage once before eight years ago, when he presented an award from the Guinness World Records to former show host, the late Alex Trebek.

Janela shared with current host Mayim Bialik that Trebek was being honored for setting the record for hosting the most episodes of the same game show. It was a nice moment to remind all of us Jeopardy! lovers once again of Trebek’s wonderful legacy, and the lasting impact he has had on viewers and contestants alike.

Jeopardy! airs weeknights on ABC at 7/6c.
