Joy Behar announced on Monday’s episode of The View that host Whoopi Goldberg‘s “got a movie she’s making and she will be back when she finishes whatever she’s doing – so she’s gone for a while.” Today, we know just how long “a while” is.
A message posted to The View‘s official Twitter account this afternoon stated, “ICYMI: Our EGOT winner is away doing EGOT things! See you soon, @WhoopiGoldberg!” Along with the message was a picture of Whoopi that read “Whoopi is in Scotland filming Neil Gaiman’s ‘Anansi Boys’ and will be back at the Hot Topics table on May 2! See you soon!”
Anansi Boys is a new Amazon Prime Video original series — not a movie — that is currently filming in the U.K. Goldberg will star as Bird Woman in the series that’s based on the 2005 book by Neil Gaiman, who will also serve as the series writer and showrunner. Anansi Boys is about a young man, Charlie Nancy (Malachi Kirby) who discovers that his dead father was an incarnation of Anansi, a West African trickster god. Eventually, Charlie learns he has a brother who looks just like him, who starts to cause chaos for Charlie. Goldberg’s character is one of several antagonists the brothers must face in the wake of their father’s death.
Though Whoopi’s absence is certainly felt, the good news is that she won’t actually be missing three weeks of tapings. The View is going on a previously scheduled hiatus next week, starting Monday, April 18, and returning on Monday, April 25, so she will technically only be missing two weeks of the live show. She’s clearly got plenty of work to keep her busy while she’s away from the panel, though. It’s like I always say, an EGOT winner’s work is never done.
