This week’s episode of Moon Knight on Disney+ had everything: monsters, hippo goddesses, and the lost tomb of Alexander the Great. But most importantly, it had kissing. Layla (May Calamawy) and Steven (Oscar Isaac) kiss before spelunking into an ancient tomb site in a desperate attempt to beat Harrow (Ethan Hawke) to the — sigh.

You know what? I actually don’t care about the plot of Moon Knight. I have no idea why Khonshu is a good god or what Ammit’s Minority Report-style of justice would do to the world. I only really care about the budding romance brewing between archaeologist Layla and one of her ex-husband’s multiple personalities. While conventional wisdom would suggest that Marc Spector, a super cool international man of mystery, is a sexy man, Layla is finally realizing that sweet, nerdy Steven Grant is slightly hotter. After all, he’s got Marc’s good looks (and intoxicating scent?), but he treats her so much better! He reads books! He tells the truth!!

I, for one, am ecstatic that Marvel’s Moon Knight is setting sweet handsome British nerd Steven Grant up as its true romantic hero. Steven is the better man, and Layla should be kissing him instead of Marc Spector.

Marvel’s Moon Knight opens by introducing us to downtrodden museum gift shop worker Steven Grant. Obsessed with all things ancient Egypt, Steven dreams of being a tour guide, but is constantly finding himself undone by what he believes is a sleep disorder. The twist is that Steven doesn’t have a sleep-walking problem, but dissociative identity disorder. His alter ego is Marc Spector, an American mercenary who works as the “avatar” of Egyptian moon god Khonshu. Marc has the ability to summon a super suit that imbues him with super strength, speed, and healing abilities. Steven finds himself thrown into this chaotic world. His only real ally? Marc’s estranged wife Layla.

Steven is immediately smitten with Layla, who is not only beautiful, but a brilliant Egyptologist. She is brave, fierce, but kind. Layla, in turn, starts to appreciate Steven’s deep wealth of knowledge about archaeology. More importantly, she is charmed by the fact that he is completely honest with her. Although she knew about her husband’s work as Moon Knight, Marc has kept many terrible secrets from Layla, including the truth about her father’s death and why he pushed her away. Steven, as awkward as he is, feels morally obligated to be transparent with Layla. It’s something she seems to appreciate the closer they get to Harrow and Ammit.

Yeah, Layla and Steven kiss in this episode! They flirt! She points out that he smells like Marc (because they share a body). He lights up like a Vegas billboard when he sees how happy she is to discover the dig site. They have chemistry built on kindness and respect. And honestly? That’s way hotter than Oscar Isaac being a stone cold badass. (Emphasis on the stone cold.)

Moon Knight might have introduced Steven Grant as a loser, but they’re setting him up to be an even bigger hero than Marc Spector. He has a stronger code of ethics, a more creative way of seeing the world, and a sweeter manner in all things. Because of that, Steven’s way more attractive than his pugnacious alter ego. He is a fully-formed person, led by empathy. Marc, on the other hand, is a bulldozer.

Moon Knight finally paired Layla with the right Oscar Isaac character this week. Let’s hope they can get out of the asylum and kiss again.
