‘Slow Horses’ Exclusive Clip: Gary Oldman Says It’s Time to “Get Used to Death”

Gary Oldman sure knows how to deliver a pep talk. The actor stars in Slow Horses, Apple TV+‘s drama about a group of MI5 agents and their leader, Jackson Lamb (Oldman). The show is finishing up its first season on the streamer, and Decider has an exclusive first look ahead of Friday’s finale episode.

The sneak peek opens with Jackson and spy River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) as they take a drive while Jackson delivers a heavy dose of realism to his young team member.

“Count yourself lucky,” he tells a clearly dejected River, who replies unconvincingly, “yeah, lucky me,” and sighs as he stars out the window and away from Jackson, who continues, “From my end of the telescope, surviving is the short straw. By the time I was your age, I’d lost a baker’s dozen.”

“It was bad enough when the war was up, but once they reduced it to bricks and rubble, everything went. Whole networks of joes rounded up, blown,” he tells River, adding, “I haven’t forgotten any of them. And I won’t forget Sid,” referring to Sidonie ‘Sid’ Baker (Olivia Cooke), a fellow member of Jackson’s “Slough House” division of M15.

Jackson ends his words of advice by telling River, “At any rate, the moral of the story is: Get used to death. Because you’re gonna see a lot more of it.”

Slow Horses, which is adapted from Mick Herron’s novel by author Will Smith, first premiered on Apple TV+ earlier this month. Along with Oldman, Lowden and Cooke, the show stars Kristin Scott Thomas, Saskia Reeves, Dustin Demri-Burns, Rosalind Eleazar, Christopher Chung, Paul Higgins, Freddie Fox, Chris Reilly, Steve Waddington, Paul Hilton, Antonio Aakeel and Peter Judd.

The final episode of Slow Horses premieres Friday on Apple TV+. The first five episodes of the series are now streaming on the platform.
