New Movies On Demand: ‘Uncharted,’ ‘Turning Red,’ ‘Superintelligence’ + More

Sometimes to find a treasure, all you have to do is look inward and discover a new part of yourself. Other times, it’s about actually finding $5 billion worth of gold doubloons. Potato, potahto.

This week’s new movies on VOD feature a couple of films about finding different kinds of treasures, in the metaphorical sense, as in Turning Red, the Pixar film that features a young girl embracing the red panda inside herself, and in the literal sense, like in Uncharted, the Tom Holland-Mark Wahlberg movie based on the wildly popular video game, where the two men go on an actual hunt for missing gold.

And then there’s Superintelligence, a movie whose greatest treasure is its cast, which includes Bryan Tyree Henry, Melissa McCarthy, Sam Richardson, and Bobby Cannavale. There have been plenty of movies made about humans and their relationship to AI, from Her to KIMI to The Mitchells Vs. The Machines. Not unlike the plot of The Mitchells, Superintelligence is about robots who threaten humanity. In the film, a talking AI (voiced by James Corden) is studying “the most average human on earth,” a woman named Carol played by McCarthy. The AI soon turns evil and threatens to destroy humanity, and only Carol can stop him.

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

Turning Red

Meilin Lee (Rosalie Chiang) is the main character in Turning Red, and she is a fierce, smart girl on the verge of womanhood, and all she wants in life is to do right by her strict mother (Sandra Oh). She also has an undying love for the (fictional, but should honestly be real) boy band 4Town. What she doesn’t realize is that when girls in her family evolve into women, they manifest as red pandas, and Mei realizes that she can either tame the panda inside her, or use it to her advantage. Come for the coming of age story, but stay for the 4Town concert at the end.

Uncharted

As a Massachusetts native, it is always a real pleasure to see actors from my state play guys with names like Murph, Fitzy or Walshy or whatever, so I’m delighted that Mark Wahlberg was the man cast to play treasure hunter Victor “Sully” Sullivan in the new adventure caper, Uncharted. In the film, which is based on the video game of the same name, Sully recruits young Nate Drake (Holland), an orphan whose brother Sam has disappeared in search of Magellan’s lost treasure. Sully had been working alongside Sam, and now he needs Nate’s help to find both Sam and the treasure, but of course they’re not the only ones on this treasure hunt, and they have to fight some bad guys like Antonio Banderas to find what they’re looking for.
