Stephen Colbert took a brief hiatus from tapings of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert from April 21 until May 2 thanks to a Covid-19 diagnosis, and now, “out of an abundance of caution,” he will be stepping away from the show again due to a resurgence of symptoms.
The news that upcoming tapings will be canceled was announced via The Late Show‘s Twitter account yesterday (May 9), which stated, “Stephen is experiencing symptoms consistent with a recurrence of COVID. Out of an abundance of caution for his staff, guests, and audience, he will be isolating for a few additional days. The Late Show will not be taping new episodes until further notice.” Colbert responded to that tweet via his personal account, writing, “WORST. SEQUEL. EVER.”
Just three days ago, Colbert’s bandleader Jon Batiste also stepped away from the show to isolate after receiving a positive diagnosis as well. It’s unclear whether Colbert was reinfected or just experiencing a resurgence of symptoms from his first bout with the virus.
On April 21, Colbert confirmed his initial positive diagnosis for Covid, stating that he was vaxxed and boosted.
It’s unclear when he will return to the show, and there don’t appear to be plans to have anyone fill in for him at this time.
