Where Was Hulu’s ‘Candy’ Filmed?

Most of the focus of the new Hulu series Candy is on Jessica Biel’s wild transformation into Candy Montgomery, the woman accused of the 1980 murder of her best friend, Betty Gore, in Dallas, Texas. But you could say that Georgia does a pretty good job transforming itself into Texas, too, because the series was not, in fact, filmed in Texas.

What is Candy about?

Here’s what we know about the real-life events that inspired Candy: Candy and her husband Pat Montgomery lived in Fairview, TX and were best friends with a couple they knew from church, Allan and Betty Gore. Candy and Allan began an affair, often meeting at the Como Motel about 20 miles away in Richardson, TX, and some time after the affair ended, on June 13, 1980, Betty Gore’s body was found in her home, having been attacked with an axe.

Candy was taken to trial and claimed that Betty confronted her about the affair and attacked her, with her lawyers arguing that Candy had suffered a “dissociative reaction” that cause her to hack her friend to pieces. In a trial that lasted eight days in Collin County, TX, a jury acquitted Candy of the crime on Oct. 29, 1980. Candy and Pat later moved to Georgia, though they eventually divorced.

Where was Hulu’s Candy filmed?

It’s purely coincidental that the Montgomerys ended up in Georgia, which happens to be where most of the filming for Candy took place. Series producer Michael Uppendahl has confirmed that most of the show used the Atlanta area as a stand-in for Texas, saying, “We shot it in Georgia. We were based in Atlanta, and we were able to shoot it around Georgia. I was shocked at how well the things were able to match up. We really found our version of Texas in Georgia.”

Exteriors, including local homes that stood in for the Montgomery and Gore homes, were shot around Atlanta and Decatur, GA, and the DeKalb Courthouse in Decatur stood in for the courthouse where the real Candy Montgomery’s trial took place. Interiors of places like the Gore’s home were filmed on a sound stage.
