Candy fans were treated to Mr. Jessica Biel himself, Justin Timberlake, on the latest episode of the true crime Hulu hit. Timberlake made a surprise cameo on Thursday’s episode of the drama, in which he plays sheriff deputy Steve Deffibaugh, who is tasked with investigating the murder of Betty Gore (Melanie Lynskey), who has been killed by Candy Montgomery (Biel).

Although both Biel and Timberlake are actors, the couple has never shared the screen together before appearing in Candy. Biel told Entertainment Weekly her husband’s involvement in Candy was accidental, and came about in part due to budget constraints on the show.

“Justin was reading the scripts. We always share material and get notes from each other and stuff like that,” she told EW. “And he was reading it, and he asked about that particular character, Steve Deffibaugh, [and said] ‘Who’s playing this guy?’ I said, ‘Oh, I don’t know. Probably like a local amazing actor from Atlanta.’ ‘We don’t have any money left’ was basically the conversation. And he said, ‘I want to play this part.’ And I said, ‘Yeah. Okay.’ He goes, ‘No, no. I want to play this part.'”

Candy didn’t have enough money to pay Timberlake for the role, but he was still game to take on the part under two conditions: he demanded ’80s-style hair and some fake flab.

“We told him, ‘We can’t pay you,’ and he goes, ‘I don’t care about getting paid. I just want you to pay for my wig and I want my prosthetic belly,'” Biel shared with EW. “We were like, ‘That we can do.'” According to USA Today, Timberlake did get “a small union scale salary” for his work on Candy.

Biel and Timberlake weren’t the only couple on the Candy set — Lynskey also brought her husband, Jason Ritter, into the fold. Ritter plays Timberlake’s partner in the murder investigation, and Biel told EW the two men became close offscreen, too, and struck up a “bromance.” How sweet!

Candy is now streaming on Hulu. The finale airs Friday, May 13.
